I recorded this cuckoo at 04.45 this morning! Did you know that it’s only the male cuckoo that makes this beautiful haunting sound? And that hearing the first cuckoo in May indicates warm weather is coming? And that when cuckoos lay their egg in their host’s nest, they throw out all their host’s own eggs and then they somehow make their egg look the same as their host’s now absent eggs, so that the host is tricked into looking after it as one of its own. When the baby cuckoo hatches, it makes the sound of multiple chicks, again to trick the parent bird into feeding it more, because often it is much larger than the host’s natural chicks. And once the cuckoo has deposited its egg it flies off to Africa, leaving the other bird to hatch and bring up its own child, never to see its child again! I mean, who knew?!
