This is Xenia, a soft coral known for its rhythmic opening and closing motion of individual polyps. Unlike hard reef-building corals, Xenia belongs to the octocorals — meaning each polyp has 8 feather-like tentacles instead of multiples of 6 typically seen in stony corals. What makes Xenia especially interesting is that scientists still debate the exact biological purpose of the pulsing behavior. Current hypotheses include: • Increasing local water circulation around the colony • Enhancing gas exchange for respiration and photosynthesis • Removing waste products and excess oxygen • Improving nutrient delivery in low-flow environments • Supporting the coral’s symbiotic algae (zooxanthellae) The pulsing itself is driven by coordinated contractions of specialized cells at the base of each tentacle.
