One of London’s most famous landmarks is actually sitting in the middle of the Arizona desert. 🌉 The current London Bridge in Lake Havasu City is the real 1831 London Bridge that once crossed the River Thames in England. By the 1960s, the bridge was slowly sinking under modern traffic weight, so the City of London decided to sell it. In 1968, American entrepreneur Robert P. McCulloch purchased the bridge for about $2.46 million in an effort to help attract tourism and growth to Lake Havasu City. The bridge was carefully dismantled in London, with each stone numbered before being shipped through the Panama Canal to California and then transported to Arizona by truck. It was rebuilt over the Bridgewater Channel in Lake Havasu City and officially reopened in 1971.
