Sports photography requires a few different things from regular portraits:
1. A fast shutter. If you want to freeze action, your shutter speed needs to be 1/1000 at minimum. For these photos, my shutter speed was 1/1600.
2. A lens with a low aperture OR lots of natural light. These were shot with a Sigma 150-600mm 5.6-6.3 lens which doesn’t always perform well indoors, but for outdoor sports when you need to ZOOM, this lens does the job!
3. Some knowledge of the game. You’ve got to be able to anticipate what’s about to happen or you’re gonna miss the action!
