Pennsylvania houses nearly 40,000 incarcerated individuals across its correctional facilities, employing more than 16,000 staff members.
The Pennsylvania Department of Corrections announced today that SCI Rockview and Quehanna Boot Camp will close by early 2026, two days after releasing a 12,000-page report recommending the closures.
Located in Centre County, Rockview houses approximately 2,148 incarcerated individuals and 658 staff members. Quehanna Boot Camp in Clearfield County is home to 348 incarcerated individuals participating in a "rigid six-month disciplinary and training program" and/or a limited-term drug treatment program staffed by 234 employees.
These shutdowns will not only impact the incarcerated individuals and facility workers but also their families and surrounding communities.
However, closures like these are not uncommon.
