If you needed an excuse to do some baking today, here you go! May 17th this year is World Baking Day. For today, Jared letterpress printed an image from a 125-130 year old electrotype (copy of a woodcut) from the Lewis Winter Collection of something you would use to bake in from the late 1800s. The text below the print of a cast iron stove and oven was typeset in 30 point Caslon and states, “Happy World Baking Day!” Lewis Winter was a woodcut artist and engraver who had his business at 627 J Street in Sacramento from 1888 to 1910. Many of the cuts in his collection at our museum are of items that would have been featured in catalogs and magazines in the 1890s. This was printed with black rubber base ink using our Washington hand press, which was made in 1852. #WorldBakingDay #baking #SacHistoryMuseum #museum #printing
