Isamu Noguchi (1904-1988) was a Japanese American artist who is best known for his abstract sculptures. 🗿 The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and the subsequent backlash against Japanese Americans motivated Noguchi to cofound the Nisei Writers and Artists Mobilization for Democracy, a group dedicated to raising awareness of the patriotism of Japanese Americans✊🏽. He then voluntarily spent six months at the Colorado River Relocation Center (Poston) internment camp for Japanese Americans in Arizona.  Following his release from Poston, Noguchi began a new series of delicate interlocking marble and slate sculptures. Of the material he wrote: “Unlike working with wood or metals, there could be no temptation to weld or glue. The very limitations of the medium imposed a kind of honesty; to find the minimum means for construction and expression rather than the myriad possibilities that metal welding involved.” ✍️ Isamu Noguchi, Untitled, ca. 1945
