They still are."- Robert Luckett, Director of the Margaret Walker Center On May 15, 1970, law enforcement officers opened fire on a crowd of students at Jackson State University, leaving two dead and at least a dozen others injured. Fifty-six years later, the Gibbs-Green tragedy remains one of the most painful and defining moments in the university’s history. While this moment is often remembered for its tragedy, we also reflect on the student response — the unity, activism, and courage to speak out in its aftermath.
