May 5th is Red Dress Day, a day to honor and remember the Indigenous women and girls who have been taken from their families and communities. As the Doulas Association of Alberta, we stand in solidarity with Indigenous peoples and we recognize the systemic injustices and violence that Indigenous women and girls continue to face. We acknowledge that Indigenous women and girls face higher rates of maternal and infant mortality, and we commit to listening, learning, and advocating for the health and well-being of all birthing people, including those from Indigenous communities. On this Red Dress Day, we remember those who have been lost and continue to demand justice and change for their families and communities. We stand with Indigenous peoples in their fight for justice, equity, and respect.
