Last week at the bgca_clubs National Conference, Angela Duckworth shared a moving keynote on the concept of grit. This was particularly fitting given my fireside chat with nfl Commissioner Roger Goodell, someone whose career embodies all the qualities of grit. Roger has spent 44 years with the NFL, nearly 20 of them as Commissioner. Before any of it, he was a kid with a dream and a stack of rejection letters that never stopped him.
Serving on the Board of Governors is meaningful to me because this work is personal: I was a Club kid, and I know the difference having someone show up for you can make in a young person’s life.
As a kid, I vividly remember watching the adults in my life who took the time to create spaces where kids like me could feel seen and supported, as well as learn about important life skills. That is what Boys & Girls Clubs of America continues to do for over 4 million young people every day.
