Black women, in particular, face a 53% higher risk of dying in a hospital setting during childbirth compared to white women, a stark reflection of the structural racism that gravely impacts health outcomes.
Within sports there is a lack of investment in maternal care; this needs to change. Whether it’s contracts or policies, one message is clear: maternal health must be treated as essential to athlete’s well-being. Centering athletes' voices in research and policy is key to dismantling barriers and improving outcomes.
