13 years ago today, I was diagnosed with PCOS. Or what is now more accurately being referred to as PMOS — Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome. And honestly, that name change matters.
For years, this condition was framed almost entirely around ovaries despite the fact that mine were never actually polycystic.
What I did have were all the other symptoms:
* Significant hormonal imbalances
* Metabolic struggles
* Rapid and uncontrollable weight gain
* Acne … everywhere
* And perhaps the hardest symptom, the feeling that something in my body just wasn’t working the way it was supposed to.
But for a long time, I ignored it. Or maybe more accurately, I normalized it. I assumed this was just the way my body was … the way most women’s bodies were. And when I was diagnosed at 24, the only thing I really heard my doctor say was how while getting pregnant may still be feasible, carrying to term could be difficult.
My brain translated that into “you will never have kids.”
That sentence ...
