Latvia’s Prime Minister Evika Silina has announced her resignation on Thursday, triggering the collapse of her coalition government just months before the country’s October general elections.
In a televised statement, Silina, of the centre-right New Unity party, said "I am resigning, but I am not giving up.” Her shock resignation comes days after the Latvia’s Defence Minister Andris Spruds, member of the government’s left-leaning coalition Progressives party, was fired over the handling of stray Ukrainian drones flying into Latvia from Russia.
The Progressives have since pulled their support from Silina, leaving her without a majority.
