In a letter posted to X, Wes Streeting has announced his resignation as Health Secretary from Sir Keir Starmer’s Labour government. Stating that he has “lost confidence” in Starmer’s leadership, the move adds to murmurs of a potential leadership bid.
Starmer has been facing heavy criticism this week over the outcome of local elections across the UK, which have been described as the worst results on record for the party.
While Starmer has insisted he will not walk away from his post as PM, Streeting is the fifth minister to step down from the government over the performance in local elections. For a leadership contest to be triggered, 20% of the party's MPs — or 81 colleagues — need to back a replacement candidate first.
