Most people grew up hearing:
“33 crore gods.”
But what if that was never the original meaning?
In Sanskrit, the word “koti” can also mean:
category.
type.
classification.
And the early Vedic tradition spoke not of 330 million gods —
but 33 divine principles.
12 Adityas.
11 Rudras.
8 Vasus.
2 Ashvins.
Together, they symbolized the forces that sustain existence itself.
And during Adhika Masa — a sacred month added to realign time —
the number 33 appears again and again.
Not as superstition.
But as symbolism.
A reminder that life is held together by countless visible and invisible forces.
Maybe ancient India was never trying to count divinity.
Maybe it was trying to understand existence.
