Everyone knows the mango as “Alphonso.” 🥭
But in Konkan, people lovingly call it “Hapus.”
And that tiny difference carries 500 years of history.
Here’s what fascinated me:
India already had mangoes for thousands of years.
Kings loved them.
Poets wrote about them.
Farmers grew them everywhere.
But mangoes grown from seeds were unpredictable.
Then the Portuguese arrived on India’s west coast…
and introduced grafting techniques that changed mango farming forever.
A premium mango variety slowly became associated with a Portuguese governor named Afonso de Albuquerque.
“Afonso” became “Alphonso” in export markets.
But locals transformed it into something warmer:
Hapus. ❤️
Today:
🥭 Alphonso is the global name
🥭 Hapus is the emotional name
One mango.
Two identities.
A story shaped by history, geography, culture and taste.
