For the first time in program history, Nebraska will host the Big Ten Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships this weekend at the newly renovated Nebraska Outdoor Track facility. All 18 Big Ten schools will compete Friday through Sunday in one of the conference’s premier championship events, bringing some of the nation’s top collegiate athletes to Lincoln. “I think it’s a great opportunity for us to showcase our facility, our state and our city,” Nebraska head coach Justin St. Clair said. “The Big Ten is so loaded across the board. You’re looking at some of the best track and field in the NCAA, if not the world.” Nebraska enters the weekend with strong momentum on both the men’s and women’s sides. The Husker women feature 11 athletes ranked in the top five of their events entering the championships, including conference leaders Axelina Johansson in shot put, Jana Lowka in javelin, Kelsie Belquist in the 400-meter hurdles and Rhianna Phipps in triple jump.
