In 1999, artist Wyland told Dallas crowds:⁠ ⁠ “Learn about the whales and save the whales.”⁠ ⁠ More than 25 years later, parts of the mural are being painted over for a new World Cup 2026 installation, and some residents say they’re mourning the loss of a city landmark. ⁠ ⁠ The company behind the new installation says part of the original mural will remain preserved “as a tribute to its lasting impact on the city.”⁠ ⁠ We also dug up archival footage from 1999, when the mural was unveiled for the first time. ⁠ ⁠ #Dallas #Wyland #PublicArt #DowntownDallas
