🗳️ A hospitality worker representing Bed-Stuy just announced he’s running against Hakeem Jeffries. And his reasoning is worth hearing out.
DJ Hamlin is in his 30s, works in restaurant management, and has never held political office. He’s running as an independent in New York’s 8th Congressional District, one of the safest Democratic seats in the country, against the most powerful Democrat in the House.
What pushed him to run? Watching Zohran Mamdani beat Andrew Cuomo when almost nobody thought it was possible.
“The politicians are not working for the people,” Hamlin told Blavity. “They’re not policy-making for the people. They’re not legislating for the people. They’re not even listening to the people.”
His platform: Medicare for All, universal basic income, tuition-free college, and expanded social housing.
