Crown shyness is a canopy phenomenon where neighboring trees leave narrow gaps between their upper branches, producing maze like patterns visible from below. Scientists believe this emerges through repeated mechanical abrasion as branches collide during wind movement, causing growth inhibition at the edges. Some studies also suggest it improves light penetration and reduces transmission of leaf eating insects or fungal pathogens. The effect appears in species such as eucalyptus, Sitka spruce, and Dryobalanops aromatica in Southeast Asian rainforests.
