NASA’s Curiosity rover captured this sunset from Gale Crater on Mars using its Mast Camera in 2015. Martian sunsets appear blue near the Sun because fine dust particles in the thin atmosphere scatter blue light more efficiently in the forward direction while red light spreads across the rest of the sky. The image helped scientists better study how suspended dust interacts with sunlight in the Martian atmosphere.
