Kidney stones are hard mineral deposits that form inside the kidneys when substances like calcium, oxalate, and uric acid crystallize in concentrated urine. Under an electron microscope, many stones reveal sharp geometric crystal structures with jagged edges capable of scraping and irritating delicate urinary tissues. Their rough microscopic surfaces help explain the intense pain people experience when stones move through the urinary tract.
