Vanuatu and Pacific nations’ leadership has achieved a major victory for climate justice!⁣ ⁣ In July 2025, the International Court of Justice (ICJ or World Court) issued an advisory opinion saying that countries have legal obligations under international law to take all possible steps to stop causing harm and take urgent action to protect the climate system. This action included emissions reduction, international cooperation, holding corporate polluters to account, and preventing climate harm.⁣ ⁣ And yesterday, 141 countries formally adopted the resolution - a written document - at the UN General Assembly, endorsing ICJ’s advisory opinion and backing a just transition away from fossil fuels! ⁣ ⁣ The campaign for the ICJ’s advisory opinion on climate change started with students and activists from the Pacific in 2019, and the UN resolution to endorse it was led by Vanuatu and 12 other countries.
