For generations, Black athletes have carried college sports.⁠ ⁠ They have filled stadiums, lifted programs, created culture, driven revenue, and made universities more powerful on and off the field. Now, the NAACP is asking a necessary question: where should that power go next?⁠ ⁠ Through its new “Out of Bounds” campaign, the NAACP is calling on Black athletes, recruits, fans, alumni, and consumers to rethink their support for public universities in states it says are weakening Black voting power.⁠ ⁠ The message is clear: Black athletic excellence should not be separated from Black political power.⁠ ⁠ NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson said it plainly: “Black athletes should not be asked to generate wealth, prestige, and power for state institutions while those same states strip political power from Black communities.”⁠ ⁠ This is bigger than sports.
