With the help of Twilo cofounder Jeff Lawson, former NBC News disinformation reporter Ben Collins wrested the 38-year-old satirical news publication, The Onion, from the grips of private equity in 2024. It's built an audience of 29.5 million—and it’s the print version, not the site, that’s driving business.
As theonion racks up print subscriptions, launches its own creative agency, and closes the InfoWars sale, Collins said success for the publication transcends the financial returns.
"It allows us to say, 'Hey, what we're doing is working.' We wanted to make a case to everybody else in the media that if you do actually double down on the stuff that your readers like and you don't capitulate... it's better for you," Collins reflected during a panel at the 2026 Most Innovative Companies Gala in NYC.
"It's better for you to go at them and say what everyone thinks."
