Every color in the rainbow has its own wavelength your eyes can detect, but purple has none. When red and blue light hit your eyes together, the signal doesn't match anything real, so your brain fills in the gap. It's basically running its own color-creation software, and you've never even noticed. Your brain's been doing this your whole life. And it's done this for pink, magenta, brown, black, and white too.
