The ASUC Judicial Council found all candidates of ASUC political party ElevateCal guilty of violating newly established election rules aimed to obstruct informal “shadow slates,” the first significant ruling involving the bylaw. In its May 7 ruling, the Judicial Council found ElevateCal guilty of violating ASUC bylaw 4202 §11.1, which prohibits presenting independents as affiliated candidates, and not guilty of violating §11.2, which prevents circumvention through coordination with third parties. The council penalized all candidates of the party with two censures each, with one censure transferring into next year’s election cycle, as backed by ASUC election bylaws. The ruling gives ASUC President-elect Margaret Solomon and Executive Vice President-elect Sydnee Thy three censures each — two censures away from the five-censure disqualification threshold.
