Here’s what nobody told you:
Procrastination isn’t a time management problem. It’s an emotion regulation problem.
When you sit down to study, your brain doesn’t see “work.” It sees a threat… boredom, anxiety, self doubt. Your amygdala fires. Your body looks for an escape. You open Instagram.
You’re not lazy. Your nervous system is protecting you from feelings you haven’t been taught how to handle.
Here’s the science backed way to start, even when you can’t:
1️⃣ NAME THE FEELING OUT LOUD
Before you open the book, say out loud: “I feel anxious about this” or “I feel overwhelmed.” UCLA research shows naming an emotion reduces amygdala activity by up to 50%. You can’t override the threat response BUT you can defuse it.
2️⃣ MAKE THE TASK STUPIDLY SMALL
Don’t tell yourself “I’ll study for 2 hours.” Tell yourself “I’ll open the book and read one paragraph.” The brain rejects big tasks. It accepts tiny ones. Once you start, momentum does the rest.
3️⃣ USE THE “IF–THEN” RULE
