AI DATA CENTERS MAY BE MAKING PHOENIX AREA NEIGHBORHOODS EVEN HOTTER 😳🌡️
A new peer-reviewed study is raising concerns about whether massive data centers around the Phoenix area could be adding even more heat to nearby neighborhoods.
Researchers measured temperatures around multiple Valley data centers in Mesa, Chandler, and Phoenix and found that neighborhoods downwind from the facilities were consistently warmer than areas upwind.
According to the study, nearby downwind areas were about 0.7° to 0.9°C warmer on average, with some temperature differences reaching as high as 2.2°C. The heat signatures were also detected as far as 500 meters away from some facility perimeters.
That may not sound like a lot at first, but in Arizona, where summer temperatures already push dangerous levels, even a small increase can matter — especially for people living nearby, dealing with higher AC bills, hotter streets, and longer extreme heat seasons.
The study also pointed out how much heat the...
