You don’t get the sense that Boots Riley will sign up for a “one for them” studio movie anytime soon. The director has devoted himself to telling one story across all his projects, about the inherently exploitative nature of a capitalist system that robs the working class of its humanity, the scams people resort to in order to survive within this framework, and the psychological damage this inflicts on both the large class of people being crushed by this system and the small class of people exerting its pressure. ‘I Love Boosters’ is his latest exploration of that struggle. Don Cheadle—who is all but unrecognizable in ‘Boosters,’ sporting a fat suit, facial prosthetics, and waist-length fake dreads as Dr. Jack, a pyramid-scheme scammer—sees Riley’s work as the best kind of propaganda.
