You may be wondering why an orthopedic surgeon is giving a medical school commencement speech…
And honestly that’s fair because we focus more on human carpentry than the basic general medicine we learned in medical school.
👉 But society is finally figuring out something orthopedic surgeons learned a LONG time ago:
🦴 Bone is one of the true organs of longevity.
🚨 20% of women over 50 have osteoporosis
🚨 Nearly 50% of women over 50 will suffer an osteoporosis-related fracture
🚨 And about 30% of people die within ONE YEAR after a hip fracture
😳 That mortality rate is worse than many cancers.
So when orthopedic surgeons fix fractures…we’re often literally saving lives.
🦴 How to keep your bones strong?
🥩 Protein-rich diet (at least 0.8 g of protein per kg of body weight per day) with vitamin D, calcium, and magnesium
🏋️ Resistance training 3-4x weekly
😴 At least 7 hours of sleep
🚭 Stop smoking
