But why were they so scared of him? Gramsci was not a criminal and he was not arrested for violence. He was a powerful critic of fascism and one of the strongest voices against Benito Mussolini's government in Italy. In 1926, Mussolini's regime began suppressing opposition voices and Gramsci was arrested despite being a member of parliament. During his trial, a fascist prosecutor made a chilling statement: "We must stop this brain from functioning for twenty years." While sitting inside a prison cell, Gramsci wrote notes and ideas that later became the famous Prison Notebooks, writings that still influence sociology, politics, media studies, and cultural studies today.
