The first Captain America Comics hit newsstands on December 20th, 1940, and featured an action shot of Captain America punching Adolf Hitler. Jewish artist Jacob Kurtzberg (pen name Jacob Kirby) and writer-editor Joe Simon (born Hymie Simon) made Captain America into a political statement against Nazism and antisemitism. The first edition clearly rallied support in America with over one million editions sold. The downside to this success is Jacob and Joe were targeted with death threats from American affiliates of the Nazi party and were even forced to have police protection.
