Years ago, went to the Middle East to visit the soldiers at different military bases.
While I was there, I had the chance to visit the military hospital and see them loading the wounded soldiers on a huge cargo plane hauling them back to the US and I remember they loaded them from least serious to most serious so the folks with the worst injuries were last on and first to get back to the hospital.
The soldiers at the front had broken bones and such that I could relate to so I would encourage them and tell them that to they would be back to feeling good in no time.
As we got to the back of the plane there were soldiers who were in bad shape.
As I looked at a maybe 20 year old soldier’s chest move up and down from a ventilator, I ignorantly asked the soldier who was leading us around “he’s going to be alright? Right?” He shook his head and said “maybe.” I was punched right in the face with the reality of the sacrifice our troops make when they sign up.
