There are presidents who manage countries, and presidents who run them like a business. Botswana just got the second kind. ⠀ Duma Boko won in 2024, ended 58 years of one party rule, and inside 18 months he is running three deals at once. ⠀ Anglo American is offloading its 85% of De Beers. Botswana already owns 15% and supplies 70% of the rough, and Boko wants the controlling stake, with Oman’s sovereign fund in the room. At the same time, a $5B refinery with Namibia at Walvis Bay, and 30% of Angola’s refinery on the table. ⠀ This is not luck. In 2023 his predecessor pushed Botswana’s diamond share from 25% to 50% by 2035. In 1976 the country walked out of the rand and built the pula, now stronger than the currency it left. ⠀ Most leaders inherit the resource and let someone else bank it.
