The discontinuation of Swimsuit for the Miss America pageant was an effort to diminish the objectification of women. However, less frequently mentioned were the quarter turns.
The quarter turn section of the program had the contestants in swimsuits and high heels, facing the judges and after a significant amount of time for the judges to review, the emcee would announce, “quarter turn, please.” The contestants would then turn to the right and wait for the next command from the emcee.
“What they were looking for were the three diamonds in the legs, which meant the tops of your thighs should touch, your knees should touch, your calves should touch, and your ankles should touch.” Dorothy Benham, Miss America 1977
