A new acrylic painting titled the Indigenous Food Pyramid is opening conversations around Indigenous Food Sovereignty, nutrition, land practices, and cultural health across Turtle Island. Developed with the editorial staff at Cultivating Culture, the artwork by Joeseph Arnoux (Piikani/Sp’q’n’i) presents an Indigenous-centred view of food systems at a moment when new federal dietary policies are rolling out in the United States. The painting names 27 foods tied to cultural and nutritional well-being — including buffalo, salmon, elk, sheep, turkey, wild rice, blue corn, beans, calabacitas, acorn squash, camas, huckleberries, prickly pear, milkweed, dandelion, mint, and maple. It also lands alongside recent tribal consultation that shaped updated USDA staple food guidance under SNAP, including expanded recognition of traditional foods.
