Two children aged 12 and 15 and two adults were killed after a train collided with a school minibus at a level crossing in Buggenhout on Tuesday morning, Belgian authorities said.
The minibus, carrying children to a special education school, was struck shortly after 08:00 local time as it crossed the tracks. Officials said the crossing barriers were already down and warning lights were active when the crash occurred.
Five other children remain in critical but stable condition in hospital. Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the collision, which occurred as the train approached Buggenhout station at around 90 km/h.
