Thousands turned out onto the streets of Havana on Friday in support of former president Raul Castro. ⁣ ⁣ The 94-year-old was indicted by the US Department of Justice on Thursday with conspiracy to kill US nationals and other crimes over the 1996 downing of two civilian planes, which killed four. ⁣ ⁣ The Cuban government continues to maintain that the planes, which were part of an anti-Cuban activist operation Brothers to the Rescue, were in the island’s airspace when they were targeted by the Cuban military - a claim the US rejects. ⁣ ⁣ The indictment is the latest in a souring of relations between the two countries, and comes amid a US-enforced near-total oil embargo on the island.
