Cuba's Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs Carlos Fernandez de Cossio warned that any US military action against Cuban officials indicted by Washington would meet "fierce resistance" from the Cuban people.
Speaking on state television, Fernandez de Cossio called the indictment of former President Raul Castro and five military officers a politically motivated act with "no legal basis, no political basis, nor any moral basis," and part of what he described as a broader US escalation against the island.
He said Washington's history of using criminal charges to justify military action against sovereign states made the indictment particularly alarming, adding that Cuban officials charged had acted in compliance with their duty to protect the country's airspace.
Earlier on Wednesday, the United States announced murder charges against former Cuban President Raul Castro, a major escalation in Washington's pressure campaign against the Cuban government.
