I’ve now done two gorilla trekking experiences this year, and while I have many thoughts to share (more on that soon) I wanted to start with a few important things to know before you go… as Gorilla trekking is one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences in the world! With that said, it’s also one worth understanding properly before you book. A few things to know: 1. Every trek is different. Some groups get lucky and reach the gorillas fairly quickly, some hike 3-4 hours (and some even longer!) before finding them. You’re assigned a family based on your ability level (also factoring in who else is trekking that day.) 2. Masks are required on every trek. This started during Covid, but researchers realised it also helped reduce the spread of other illnesses that gorillas are especially susceptible to.
