The drainage work is part of the Southeast Louisiana Urban Flood Control Project (SELA), Algiers Subbasin “SELA 72.2”, a federally funded project led by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in partnership with the Sewerage & Water Board of New Orleans. The goal: Reduce flooding in the heart of Algiers by upgrading the General de Gaulle drainage canal to handle a 10-year storm, roughly 9 inches of rain in 24 hours.
