Underwater boxing, 2009, Mick Gleissner. Gleissner became known in the late 2000s and early 2010s for highly stylised underwater shoots involving mermaids, furniture, motorcycles, models, divers and elaborate constructed sets. Much of the work was created inside Bigfoot’s purpose-built underwater tank facilities in Cebu, Philippines, originally designed for film production. This has been on our moodboard for forever. We first shared the photo set on Glorious about five years ago, back when the platform was still finding its shape, and we still come back to it now. Women’s boxing has changed massively since 2009. So has photography, technology and the way sport is documented online, yet culturally these images still hold up as a genuinely timeless photo set.
