💰 The U.S. government is considering paying $1.7 billion to Jan. 6 defendants. Meanwhile, H.R. 40 — a bill that would simply STUDY reparations for Black Americans — has never received a full congressional vote in nearly 40 years.
Let that sit.
The Trump administration is considering a proposal tied to an “anti-weaponization” fund to compensate people charged in connection with the Jan. 6 Capitol riot — drawing intense backlash as reparations legislation for descendants of enslaved Black Americans continues to stall in Congress.
Rep. Summer Lee said it plainly: “This corrupt government doesn’t value Black life the way it values white rage.”
H.R. 40 doesn’t even authorize direct payments — it would simply create a commission to study the lasting impacts of slavery, segregation, and redlining. First introduced in 1989, it has still never been voted on.
This isn’t just about Jan. 6. It’s about who America decides deserves to be made whole. 🔗 Full story at the link in bio.
