The strange “question mark” spotted in a 2023 James Webb Space Telescope image is believed to be a pair of distant interacting galaxies warped by gravitational lensing. Their stretched shape created the curved upper loop and bright dot resembling punctuation. Because Webb observes deep infrared light from the early universe, the object may date back billions of years, showing galaxies that existed when the cosmos was still extremely young.
