A 26-year-old iMac just ran an AI model completely offline. No internet connection. No cloud servers. No subscriptions. Just a machine from 1999 generating a real AI response locally in seconds.
And that’s what makes this so interesting.
Most people picture the future of AI as giant GPU farms, massive data centers, and endless cloud computing. But at the same time, another shift is happening quietly in the background: models are becoming smaller, faster, and efficient enough to run on hardware many people considered useless years ago.
That changes a lot.
Local AI means better privacy, offline access, lower costs, and less dependence on large cloud platforms. It also gives old hardware a second life instead of turning it into e-waste.
Not long ago, running useful AI models locally required expensive setups and high-end GPUs. Now developers and hobbyists are experimenting with lightweight models on phones, Raspberry Pis, aging laptops, and apparently even late-90s iMacs 😭
And hone...
