Esther Lederberg (1922-2006) was a pioneer in microbial genetics. Having earned a Master's degree from
#stanforduniversity
she pursued a PhD at the University of Wisconsin. Both she and her husband Joshua Lederberg were recognized for their pioneering work. However Lederberg won the
#nobelprize
and in his acceptance speech recognized his wife's “companionship,” only briefly referencing her discovery of lambda phage. While her husband rose quickly in the academic ranks, she never even received tenure. She divorced Lederberg and her second husband upon discovering her contributions, created a memorial page online highlighting photographs and documents proving her scientific contributions.
