Mosquitoes can be trained to become attracted to DEET, the gold standard in insect repellent. A study revealed that if mosquitoes manage to feed on human blood despite the presence of DEET (such as when the repellent wears off), they learn to associate the smell of the chemical with food, overriding their natural aversion to it.'
However, researchers say if people reapply the insect spray once it starts to wear off, it will still be strong enough to deter the mosquitoes.
