Hot-dip galvanization is one of the oldest and most effective forms of corrosion protection in structural engineering. The principle is deceptively simple: submerge clean steel in a bath of molten zinc (~450°C), allow an intermetallic bond to form, withdraw, and let it solidify. The result is a metallurgically bonded coating — not a paint, not a film, but a series of iron-zinc alloy layers that become part of the steel itself.
The process begins long before anything touches zinc. Surface preparation is everything:
• Degreasing removes oils and organic contamination (caustic solution bath)
• Pickling strips mill scale and rust via dilute hydrochloric or sulfuric acid
• Rinsing prevents acid carryover
• Fluxing (typically zinc ammonium chloride) activates the surface and prevents re-oxidation during immersion
