Rescuers in Laos safely evacuated the first of five villagers trapped inside a flooded cave for more than a week, while efforts continue to locate two others still missing.
The group became stranded after flash flooding blocked their way out while they were reportedly searching for valuable minerals inside the cave in Xaisomboun province. Rescue teams from Laos and Thailand, joined by international diving specialists, have been pumping water from the cave and delivering food, water and blankets to the trapped villagers.
Videos shared online showed the emotional rescue operation as the first survivor emerged from the cave, assisted by divers and medics waiting nearby. Authorities say difficult weather conditions and narrow flooded passages continue to complicate rescue efforts.
